Pictures With Purpose 2009 begins

David LaBelle began his Pictures With Purpose 2009 workshop today from his home in Oak View, Calif. His opening comments set the tone for the workhop in the days to come. This is just a clip from today.

David LaBelle chasing the light

David LaBelle and I spent an afternoon last month chasing the light, looking for image to capture for his stock photography business, Native Son Stock. The site, created by David, features images exclusivly from Ventura County and has contributions from other local photographers including myself and Eric Parsons. On this outing, David and I drove around, intially chasing a rainbow, but ended up near Lake Casitas outside of Oak View capturing light, clouds, mountains and the clean air.

The Tucker LaBelle Show

The second assignment I shot in the MPV107 course was called “My First Time.” The idea is to interview someone talking about their first time doing something like driving a car or getting a tattoo. My first thought was to tape myself (still plan on doing that, perhaps a video for a future post?) but ended up relying on a set of images I made almost 10 years earlier… my friends Erin and David LaBelle and the birth of their first son Tucker LaBelle. Back then, I shot film and was far from thinking that I would use these images for anything other than giving them to the LaBelle’s as a record of that special day. It was only after learning video that I knew to tie the two mediums together.

Pictures with Purpose Day 2

As you can imagine, getting two dailies up in two days was pretty exciting for me. This was becoming easy… boy what little I knew :)

Pictures With Purpose Day 1

David LaBelle and I work closely together on a lot of things but when it comes to his photojournalism workshops, he works his magic. However I managed to tape him for a few lectures, just to compile an archive of him speaking. This is a clip from about an hour of footage… I was pretty excited about this because this was my first ‘daily’ clip. Cool thing was I knew which sound bite I wanted. Once I downloaded the raw footage, the longest part was finding that one soundbite. By this time, July of 2008, I had a handle on Final Cut Pro so cutting this one sound bite was not that big of a deal. I managed to get this particular clip up on our Face Book group that afternoon.
