Naval Hospital Yokosuka, Japan, and then became commanding officer of the 3rd Medical Battalion headquartered in Okinawa. After another assignment as Force Troops Medical Officer at Twentynine Palms, California, now–Capt. Fisichella received orders to Vietnam. It was a shocking and unwelcome assignment for a man who had just gotten married. “So, what was my job over there? ” On the airplane going over, I met a wonderful lady who listened to me bitching to her the whole time because I had to leave my wife.

The rest of us all rotated on nights for OR call. And that usually kept us quite busy because you never knew what was coming in. We started off working five days, and then as things progressed we worked six. I think for the most part we worked the six-day schedule during the time I was there. Later, as more casualties began coming in, they began working seven days. When I first arrived, the hospital had just been opened. The only other military hospital was one in Nha Trang, which was an Army hospital about 250 miles north.

As in all other emergency situations, a host of civilian and military volunteers quickly augmented the small hospital staff. The Military Assistance Command Surgeon and his staff of Army doctors, the director of public health, and the United States Operations Mission and his staff of civilian physicians offered immediate aid. Navy dentists also were on hand to help treat the casualties. The small Air Force hospital at Ton Son Nhut and the Army hospital at Nha Trang called — as soon as they received word of the bombing — that they were standing by to help in any way possible.
