Our perception of a stimulus will be influenced by the way in which it is integrated with everything we are experiencing at that moment. If our internal map of the space around us is distorted, that may influence our ability to interpret letters on a page or a voice speaking across the room. Our response to and perception of a stimulus are affected by internal maps.

A neural synapse can be thought of as a method of communication between cells. Many of the connections between cells are laid down before birth, creating a topographic map of the body. As the infant begins to move, interneurones are stimulated to plug into these circuits to refine the maps and the connections between them. The progression from random, spontaneous motions to planned intentional movements reflects the refinement of these connections.
