We lived with my grandmother until I was about four years old. While we lived on Spruce Street, my mother often competed with my grandmother for my affections. My grandmother and I used to do many things together. We rode the train from Redwood City to San Jose, mostly to the only theater around that showed Mexican movies. We used to window-shop, too. I remember shoplifting little toys and my grandmother looking the other way, pretending not to notice.

Evie would try almost anything, no matter how difficult or dangerous. I would marvel at her tenacity and determination to hang with me. And it never felt like competition, more like bonding or camaraderie. She was indeed a buddy. We lived in East Menlo Park approximately three years, and in that time our neighborhood became gripped with fear Page 16 of the gradual integration of African-Americans. My father is somewhat of a bigot, which is still confusing to me.
