The Amgen Tour of California Stage 5 through downtown Ojai. Shot with my Samsung Galaxy Note 4 using the built-in camera (cut with Premier Pro). I’ve been attempting at using this phone more as a professional visual journalist, since I stopped using the iPhone in January (temporarily!)

2012 Workshop Behind The Scenes Video “Chattanooga”

Posted in Uncategorized on August 8th, 2012 by admin

We spent a week in the St. Elmo neighborhood of Chattanooga, Tenn., at the Pictures With Purpose photojournalism workshop and had a great time. With the three faculty (David LaBelle, Billy Weeks and myself) along with the six participants and guest presenter Mark Johnson, all involved seemed to get something out of the relationships we built.

JEA National Conference Digital Photo Class

Posted in iPhone, Journalism on December 14th, 2011 by admin

Had the pleasure to present at the JEA Fall Convention in Minneapolis a few weeks back. While there, I helped out Andy Nelson of Kansas State University with a digital photography class. How can I NOT shoot the class on iPhone video, especially since this was the topic of one of my presentations.

iPhone: The Western Foundation of Vertebrate Zoology
iPhone: The Western Foundation of Vertebrate Zoology

Spent the morning over in Camarillo, Calif., filming the 9th annual open house of The Western Foundation of Vertebrate Zoology. What a place!!! I had no idea there was such a collection here in Ventura County. Nonetheless, I wanted more practice with editing a daily video on the iPhone. I used 1st Video again but this time used the FilMIC Pro App to record the video. Very nice addition to the app collection. Took me a lot less time to edit this piece, about 3 hours. Still a long time but it’s nice to be able to edit without a computer and FCP. One complaint about 1st Video is no ability to color correct, as you’ll see in this video. Mercury Vapor lights, the worst!

iPhone: Cats in the Canyon & Hounds in the Hollow

Posted in iPhone, Journalism, Video on October 15th, 2011 by admin

Last weekend I had the opportunity to hang out with my Humane Society of Ventura County friends at one of their annual fundraisers, Cats in the Canyon & Hounds in the Hollow at Arroyo Verde Park in Ventura, Calif. It was a perfect opportunity to shoot another daily video on my iPhone, this time though ALSO TO EDIT it on the iPhone. Thanks to Ray Meese at the VC Star for turning me on the the iPhone app, 1st Video by VeriCorder. There are some things to work out, like making sure the camera is MUCH more steady and practicing more on the app itself. It’s amazingly deep but complicated – it’ll just take time to practice. I cut a version in FCP to compare the two, not much difference! The version here is the iPhone version. Enjoy.
